While creating your website – the most difficult challenge that many webmaster have is…

Time Management.

It does not matter if you are an experienced webmaster or just starting out. The time restraints you have while building can make the best laid plans can go on the wayside.

We all have had the problem of jumping from one project to another to another and after the week (or month) you start to realize you did not accomplish anything you wanted to.

1. Write down your tasks

The many tasks you do while building your site take on a whole different meaning when you may only have a few hours a day to actually accomplish them.

To help with the time management challenge, write down the jobs you need to work on for your site. Whether this is link building, blogging, create new pages in your web site, keyword research that needs to be done, etc.

This information needs to be written down where you can view it daily to help keep the time monster harnessed.

I have cleaned off everything not important from my computer desktop and created a new folder called: TASKS TO DO. I capitalize this and put it right in the middle of the computer screen so it catchs my eye over all the other stuff also on my desktop.

I then open my MSWord and title the page: Tasks To Do.

If you are working on a few different websites, try to keep the information on 1 page. Just bold the website names, then put the task below them.

By keeping everything on one page, you can do a quick scan of what needs to be done.

2. Prioritize

This may sound difficult and somewhat time consuming but can help you “gain time” while working on your projects.

An easy way to help you prioritize your projects is to use a two week cycle. Set aside one day to work on a certain project.

The two biggest projects for building a website is creating new content and link building.

Here is a breakdown of how you could prioritize a two week period for creating new blog post, web pages and link building.

Monday: Research for keywords to be used in a new web page or blog post. Can’t think of any? Study your website analytical stats or look at your competition.

Tuesday: Write a few sentences of information you would like to put into the new web page and see what others have written about using the main keyword.

Wednesday: Use the information from Monday and Tuesday to create your new page or blog.

Thursday: Use Keyword Research from Monday to create an article for directories to help with link building. Don’t send to article directory until tomorrow.

Friday: Re-read your web page and article, make any changes.

Saturday: Go through your “To Do List” and see if you able to cross anything off the list.

Sunday: Enjoy your time with family, friends, a good book or movie. Take time for YOU!

Monday: Look for a few other sites you could link with and contact their webmaster.

Tuesday: Research other avenues to help you get quality links: social media, article directories, etc.

Wednesday: Look at your competition. (this could be done everyday, but can get very time consuming). Look at older web pages and blog posts to see the keywords they used as it may help create you create a new blog post or page with updated information. (main keyword could be researched next Monday)

Thursday: Research for that new e-book or any other big project that you would like to tackle in the next couple of weeks.

Friday: Take a look at your “To Do List”. Add new projects and take away any completed.

Saturday: Search around for new content for your site/blog.

Sunday: Enjoy your time with family, friends, a good book or movie. Take time for YOU!

3. Keep Up With The List

No matter what type of projects are on the list, they still have steps that need to be done in order before they are completed. By thinking of what order the steps needs to be done, it will help you build your 2 week cycle.

By focusing on one or two project at a time in a two week cycle, you will find your projects will be done and at the end of the week (or month) you have the satisfaction of knowing you have managed your time.

With so many people reselling hosting and domain names. How do you really know if you are getting a good price when you purchase a domain name?

Research!

That is the only way to see if you really are getting a good deal.

Not to long ago domain names were over $30 for a year and there still are companies charging that ridiculous price.

There are many companies that have special pricing for buying a name. You can purchase a domain if you buy any non-domain product (like webhosting). This may be a good deal if you are looking for more than just a domain.

Saving a few dollars may not seem to important for you but remember when you have to renew the domain you will have to pay the going rate at that time.

That is why I try to research when I am buying something expessily if I will have a reoccuring charge every year on a product.

Before you purchase the name, take a look to see if you can get a discount on multiple year purchase or multiple domain purchases. Many of the domain registars will do that.

If you are planning on building a website and believing that purchasing a domain name is the first step.

It is not.

Take your time to research different names. Even by moving the words around can help you with a great domain name. Yes, most of the one and two word names are gone (not all but most). But you can still find a great name at an affordable price.

When you are creating a website finding free tools you can find to help you build your site is great so I have started compiling a list of free webmaster tools.

Many of the really good tools to help you build a successful website could be out of your reach like Site Build It with a price tag of $299.00 a year, well worth the price and no, Site Build It is not a scam!! so if you can find the money to buy it, you will not be disappointed and you won’t be “surfing” all over the Internet trying to find all the tools. They have an all-in-one software program to create a website.

But if you really can’t afford it, there are many free tools to help you build a website.

HTML Editors

If you can’t afford any web design software package, you can use Nvu which is a free web building software to create your web pages and upload them to your web hosting. You will need to find templates, but you can find those free on the Internet also. Search for free website templates.

To upload your pages to your web host, Nvu does have a built-in FTP (File Transfer Protocol). You just put your information (the welcome e-mail from your web hosting company will let you know your user name, password) in the the area for publishing, and click Ok.

Keyword Research Tools

There are many free keyword research tools available. Here is a search for free keyword research tools to get you started.

Website Analytics

Once you have your web site online, you will want to see the information of your visitors. by using website analytical software you can find out about your visitors, how long they are on your site, where they came from, from what search engine they found you on, what keywords they used to find you and much more.

Statcounter

It was easy to install, especially on XsitePro. The free program tracks up to 500 page views, find out the pages that are getting traffic and the ones that are not. Once you hit 500 page views then the older ones start to drop off if you don’t pay for an upgrade. You don’t have to pay for an upgrade to stay with them, that is the nice thing. They don’t spam you with e-mails telling you need to pay for the upgrade once you are getting close or over your quota. It is up to you. If you have problems with trying to put the code on your site, they have a forum where you get help.

Google Webmaster Tools

Many beginners do not realize all the free information that Google has available in their webmaster tools area. Submit your URL, Site map, have analytics to put on your site to track your visitors, blogs, tips, instructions, help with search engine optimization and so much more to help you with your website creation. Even if you don’t use all the tools, but want to use the sitemap area, it is great information. Once you submit your sitemap, usually within a day or so, Googlebot will come to your site and spider it. If it finds any problems, it will let you know what it is and explain different ways to fix it.

Web Hosting

You can find free web hosting, but if you are going to be an affiliate marketer trying to make money online, you really need to pay the extra cost because using free hosting has to many limitations and many visitors may not take you serious enough. If you say that you can afford to register a domain name and buy a web hosting plan, then you need to ready my article on how you can build your own website for under $50 a year. That includes register an domain name and web hosting or if you are in a hurry, take a look at GoDaddy.com for web hosting. Their basic web hosting starts at $3.99 per month.

If you want to build a website, yes, you can create a free site, but you will be limited on what you can do with it. Also if you are planning to make money with the website, you could be very limited on the money generating ads (like Google Adsense) that you can use on the site.

Web site building costs will vary. These prices are average.

1. Web Design Software – From free to US$500. (many web hosting companies have website software available free with your hosting plan)

2. Web Hosting – Average cost of US$6.95 a month.

3. Domain Name – Average cost US$8.00 a year.

4. Your Time

By doing a little research, you can build a website for under US$100 a year (not including your time) if you look around at the different web hosting companies.

Many times if you commit to a hosting plan for 2 or 3 years, you will get a better price. You may think, “Gee, I don’t know if I want to commit to that host company for that long”.

Check out their refund policy. If you sign up for say 2 years and pay for it all up front, but decide after 1 year that you want to move your website someplace else, you should be able to get the year you have not used refunded to you. If not, maybe you need to find another company to deal with.

If you can’t find answers to your questions in their FAQ’s, then talk to one of their customer service people using the online chat, that most of the web host companies now have.

Many people forget #4. Yes, your time is an important factor to keep in mind when you are thinking about building a site. Unlike a normal 9-5 job, you don’t create a website in one weekend and then see the money rolling in by the following week. (even though many sites will let you believe that) It takes time.

Do you plan on building more than just one site? Then your choice of the web design software program you will be using may play a role in which one you will use.

Here is a web hosting comparison chart for a quick overview.

Create a Website Tutorial

This website was not my first, nor even my third…but after seeing the same steps time after time of:

1. Register Domain

2. Choose Web Hosting Plan

3. Choose Web Site Design Software

and finding they did not work for me, I finally decided, “Hey, if I am this frustrated, I am sure other people are also, so I built how to create a website to help beginners learn.

It shows all the steps you need and then some because while building the website you need to learn about search engine optimization and once your site is up on the Internet, you need visitors, so I have added how to generate free traffic to get you going.

There is a lot of information on my website and hope it helps you with your goal.
