Leaving your job to start your home based business using internet affiliate marketing takes time, dedication and yes even money.

I am not writing this to tell you that it can’t be done, but I want you to understand that if really want to become an affiliate and make a living from the Internet you need to treat the affiliate programs as a business.

When I say to treat it like a business I mean that:

1. You have a plan -

Plan A

You create a website (or blog), sign-up for different affiliate programs, create the links (or place banners) on your site, sit back and the money will come rolling in.

Yes, that was your plan, but have you found out it doesn’t work? So you are right back at square one and either you quit or you will go to “Your Plan B”

Plan B

2. You make a goal.

You create a theme based website on something you are familiar with.

You work on the content for your website by using original content.

Look for affiliate programs that go with what the theme of your website is.

Sure all this sound easy. But it takes time, dedication and yes, again I say it, money.

If you are wanting to build a business using affiliate marketing a free web hosting plan may not be to your advantage. Sure, it sounds good, but you can be very limited to what you can do.

I see many newbies on the forums wanting to know what the best area is to get into to start making money fast.  Affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick-scheme.

The scammers out there will let you believe that and for only $9.95 they say they have all the information for you to start making THOUSANDS per day immediately and quit your day job forever. DON’T BELIEVE IT.

There are many forums online that can help you find the answers to your questions and help with getting you started.

Affiliate marketing can be a very rewarding experience but take your time to get to know the ins and outs.

The very first step you need to do to get into the marketing area is to do research. If you have a theme based website that you are thinking of starting see if there is a need for it.

Remember, you don’t need to be selling something on your site. Many informational websites do extremely well with generating income for the webmaster.  Why is this? Because people are looking for answers and they hope to find it on the Internet.

How much do you want to make a month? $300, $600, a $1000 a month or more? Then let’s take it under perspective for just a minute.

Whether your money making links are on a website or a blog, it will be “open” 24 hours in a day, 365 days a year (if you have a good web host company, then your downtime should be at a minimum). So if you are looking to make (to start out) $300 a month then you will need to make $75 dollars a week or about .45 an hour.

Yea, sure that does not sound like a whole lot and it really isn’t. But remember this money can be generated by using not only your merchant affiliate links, but by using Google Adsense or other advertising, selling an ebook or many of the other ways you can make money online with your website or blog.

I am not saying to throw up a blog or website and place links all over it to help with making money, try to get the most out of each of your affiliate programs. See the different links you can use. Maybe they have some banners that you could also use.

Diversify your website.

Many people want to have a website created just for Google adsense. With the search engines getting smarter and smarter, many of these websites are not getting ranked very well as there’s not a whole lot of original content on the pages and possibly not getting indexed at all.

If you are signed up with a few merchants as an affiliate, maybe you need to take a look at seeing other ways you can generate income from your site.

Besides using Google adsense are there other advertising methods you could use to help you in making money?

Do you have information on your site that have books written about it and are more indepth? Take a look at Amazon and even ebay to add those books to your site.

What web hosting provider are you using? Are you happy with them? Downtime at a minimum? Had problems and their customer service went out of their way to help you with it? Check your hosting company and I will bet they have an affilite program also. Since you are a customer, that even helps better when promoting a product.

There are many, many different ways to make money with your website or blog. Look around – you may be amazed at the different ways you can diversify your website.

Most people don’t read the fine print when they sign up with affiliate programs. This can create a lot of frustration later.

When you sign up with Clickbank as an affiliate marketer, you can set the amount on your account for when you will get a check sent to you, if you don’t set the amount, the default is $100.00.

If your account is over the amount you set and you have not received a check, here may be one reason why you have not received the money.

Taken from ClickBank Accounting Policy:

Customer Distribution Requirement

“ClickBank accounts cannot be used for the sole purpose of collecting rebates or otherwise extending credit to yourself or others. In compliance with US law, ClickBank will withhold payment of any account balance until it contains standing sales made with 5 or more different credit card numbers, including at least one Visa card, and one MasterCard. PayPal and eCheck purchases do not count toward the minimum.” (I added the emphasis)

So what this says that even if you have set your payment to be sent to you when your account reaches $100, it will not be sent until you have sales of 5 or more different credit card numbers…..(see rest above)

While I understand this, many new affiliates do not realize this and get upset when they don’t receive their payment, even though they have reached their payout amount.

There, of course, is more information on their accounting policy and if you are a new Clickbank affiliate, you should take a look at their policy information, not only for the above information but also to understand that when you finally are paid, they will take out a $2.50 accounting charge for each check issued.

Don’t get me wrong, there are many, many great products to promote using Click Bank, just make sure when you sign up with this or any affiliate program you read the fine print. I know it is boring and no one likes to do that, but it can save frustration down the road.

I have seen to many “make money” sales pages that tell you they will send you the FREE information once you give them your e-mail. Why not just give it to the person when they arrive and then use other affiliate programs to make money with?

The search engines love content on a website. But not just any type of content, but unique content.

That is what you need to set your website off from your competitors and by using the one page sales ad may not be the answer.

Branch out and don’t keep your eggs in one basket. Build an informative website and find other affiliate programs to make money with, not just one.

Research the affiliate networks (LinkShare, Commission Junction, etc..) to see if you can find other programs to work with. You may be surprised at how many other programs would help fit your theme.

If you have became an affiliate for different merchants and it does not seem to be making money for you, before you throw in the towel completely, here are a few things to think about.

1. How is your content on the pages? Is it really geared towards the visitors that you have?

2. Are you not receiving any traffic? If this is the problem, what have you done to promote your website? Have you uploaded your URL or sitemap to Google, Yahoo and other search engines. Here is help to generate free traffic to your website.

3. Are the products that you are promoting really within your theme? or are they just a jumble of different products that have no relation to each other?

4. Did you do any keyword research? Are people really looking for your products?

There are many affiliate marketers forums that you can use to have your site reviewed. If you haven’t already, it may be a good idea to look for a few and see if you can get more help.
